Assortment Width and Depth

Width is the number of different choices offered; depth is the quantity held of each choice. Both affect the way an order uses money and shelf space.

Practical Considerations

A wide assortment can become difficult to replenish if each design arrives in a different case pack. A deep order of one design is easier to handle but places more of the purchase on a single choice.

Suggested Procedure

  1. List the variants customers need to distinguish.
  2. Assign a quantity to each variant rather than only a total.
  3. Check whether later replenishment can repeat the same selection.

Illustrative Example

A retailer considering sixty gift bags could compare six designs at ten each with three designs at twenty each. The totals match, but the display, storage and replenishment questions differ.

Points to Check

Do not let an unspecified assortment decide the store's range by accident. Request the design distribution before approving the order.
