Preparing a Stock Count Routine

A stock count is more useful when the counting unit and the treatment of open packs are agreed in advance.

Practical Considerations

Count the sales floor and back stock using the same saleable unit. Keep damaged, sample and reserved items distinguishable so they are not accidentally treated as ordinary available stock.

Suggested Procedure

  1. Define the unit being counted.
  2. Count each location systematically.
  3. Record adjustments with an explanation.

Illustrative Example

For a four-piece coaster set sold as one unit, count complete sets. A loose display coaster should not become a quarter of an available set unless the store intentionally sells individual pieces.

Points to Check

A count is a point-in-time record. Record the date and any stock movements occurring during the count so differences can be investigated.

Working Record

Use the stock count sheet to put the relevant information in one place. You can complete it in your browser, save a text copy or print a blank form for use in the store. Entries are not submitted to RuralAttune.
